The agro-export sector in Peru needs improved social protection
The Global Network Latin America/PLADES participated in a workshop on labour rights and social protection for workers in the agro export sector in Ica, Peru.
The activity had the objective to raise awareness among workers of their rights and to encourage workers to denounce cases of violation of fundamental rights and health and safety at work.
One of these cases was reported on mid-November when six workers - among them a pregnant woman - were exposed to toxic fumigations.
Cases like these are not a rarity but they are not always denounced and hence companies can enjoy full impunity.
Workers aware of their rights and alerted civil society organisations are key to make sure the basic right to health and safety is respected.
