GHANA TUC/Global Network Africa advocacy workshop on social protection
Ghana TUC, with the support of the Global Network Africa, held a one day advocacy workshop on social Protection for Domestic Workers on Monday, 15th November. The purpose of the workshop was - among others - to advocate for social protection for domestic workers in Ghana.
Participants in the workshop expressed concern about the situation of domestic workers in Ghana characterized by social protection deficits. This situation was illustrated by the presentation of real life experience:
Ms. Emmanuella Otorchie is a 27 year old native of Accra, the capital city of Ghana. She is a qualified Caterer and holds a Grade 2 of the Vocational qualification. She is single and currently pursuing further education on part time basis. Ms. Otorchie's employer does not contribute to social security on her behalf. She has no other benefits besides accommodation and meals. On sick leave, she stated that:
"My request for him to register me under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was refused. They don't care when I am sick. I attend hospital and pay my own bill. Fortunately, I have never suffered from prolong ailment...."
Participants identified the forthcoming ILO Convention on domestic workers as an important step forward and requested Ghana TUC to lobby the government to make sure the convention includes social security coverage and maternity leave rights.
