Social Protection: the missing piece in the development puzzle
The European Union should adopt a comprehensive policy framework for social protection, tied to concrete, time-bound commitments and dedicated resources. The recommendation comes from the 2nd European Report on Development (ERD) launched on December 7th during the European Development Days.
The Social Protection for Inclusive Development report calls the EU and its member states to support developing countries efforts to set up and scale up sustainable social security schemes.
The ERD is an initiative sponsored by the European Commission and seven EU Member States (Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden and the UK). The research is conducted primarily at the European University Institute in Florence.
