Universalizing Health Care, a Must - CSOs

Quezon City, Philippines – As a sweeping follow-through on their social protection agenda, the civil society organizations (CSOs) that make up KAMP (or Kampanya para sa Makataong Pamumuhay – Dignified Life for All Campaign) met again on June 29, 2010 at the Assembly Hall of the National College of Public Administration in U.P. Diliman. The group held a forum entitled “Universalizing Health Care” which featured reports and lectures from distinguished health panelists of whom Former Department of Health Secretary Dr. Alberto Romualdez, Former Akbayan-Citizen’s Action Party Representative Risa Hontiveros and Dr. Orville Solon of the UP School of Economics were so noted.

Dr. Romualdez presented a brief overview of the country’s health care system using a study done on the subject several years ago. Rep. Hontiveros provided a review of the health status of women with the view that a Reproductive Health Care system must be installed in the public sector, while Dr. Solon concluded that the money being spent in the health care system is sufficient to pay for a critical package of health services for all Filipinos.

Global Network-Asia’s participation in this event was made possible by the Labor Education and Research Network’s connection with the organizers, KAMP in particular.
